Chapter Ten

“However did you receive this news?” Rin asked, gripping the handhold while he casually rested the other hand in his lap.

“The roundabout way.” I sighed. “Riki are not speaking to us. The language is somewhat different, yes, but their unwillingness even to consider some type of a peace agreement is unprecedented. I’ve sent soldiers to every nation surrounding their land and finally this morning, we received some news.”

“I wasn’t aware that you’d gone that route once more. The first time was an utter failure,” Rin mumbled, looking at me through the cloud.

“It was Vox’s idea, actually. This war has been going on long enough that I gave him free rein to try whatever he thought could help. Just to inform me beforehand. This time all the units came back alive and uninjured, and one came with information.”

“They are honestly that desperate? It truly must be a hopeless situation if they are not even willing to negotiate.”

“They either die at our hand or out of thirst. I wouldn’t want to make that choice either, but it’s the only one they have.” I sighed.

“Do you know how they even reached this point?”

“Apparently their own nation is divided. The north side of the territory is beneath the mountains, and during the summer, the snowmelt fills the rivers enough so that they have water during the whole year. But the south part is surrounded by the desert. In the past few years, the two rivers they depend on to supply them with water have started to dry up and lately they can barely survive the heat. Unfortunately, the north has different traditions and ways of life, so they refuse to house the southern tribes or provide them with help. They’ve had almost as many conflicts between them as we had before our marriage. I was told that the war started because their previous conflicts with the northern Riki have proven to be futile and traveling downward through the desert to the nation that was already weakened by war was a more manageable option. Their life expectancy isn’t high and they are doing all they can to win the war before they die out.” I was so tired of the whole situation and I couldn’t see a solution.

“Why not negotiate with us for the water? We would willingly provide it,” Rin exclaimed, seemingly confused.

“They don’t trust us not to poison it. Besides, they already had a similar arrangement with the north and eventually the north went back on their word. I imagine at this point they need a permanent solution.”

Rin was swearing on his side and I shared the sentiment. We couldn’t seem to get a break and it had been so long since the last time I’d even touched my husband. The very notion of not receiving a chance to see him again filled me with dread.

“Merin! We are under attack again, we need you.” Vox had opened the tent flap.

“I need to leave, my king. We will speak again in two days. My love is with you,” I told Rin quickly, already tugging on my discarded armor.
